Kanaal Wijnegem

Rebirth of an industrial site

Activity: Buildings
Share on:

Kanaal is a former industrial site which has been converted into a multi-purpose ensemble of housing and business premises. This thanks to the talents of three architectural practices and the expertise of BESIX-Vanhout.

Industrial remains

Situated on the outskirts of Antwerp, along the Albert Canal, Kanaal combines harmoniously some hundred apartments, twenty offices and a dozen shops, on a more than 30,000 m² one-time industrial site which it integrates and enhances. 11 buildings, both renovated and new, offer a distinctive living and working environment, with services close at hand. An attractive solution for Antwerp's mobility problems.

Surprising renovations

Renovation projects rarely proceed without surprises. They demand plenty of flexibility, close collaboration between design and construction teams, and resourcefulness in coming up with innovative solutions. The re-development plans for one of the old silos, for example, was completely adapted, enabling a swimming pool to be placed on the top floor, some 50 m above ground.

Our client wanted to offer excellence to buyers and we did everything to satisfy him.

Firsts of their kind

Certain of the apartments feature a loggia: a huge 25 m² window opening out onto breathtaking views of the surrounding Canal. These steel windows are the first of their kind. BESIX-Vanhout came up with an innovative, customized solution, with excellent air-water-wind performance. BESIX Group's vast international supplier network proved invaluable in finding the right partners and meeting all the customer's requirements.
